Evergreen Shrubs

Evergreens

Evergreen shrubs are an essential addition to the landscape because they provide color and texture year round. Many horticulturists use evergreens for backdrops, borders or screens in gardens that include a number of other annual and perennial plants. The leaves of evergreen shrubs are persistent throughout the growing season, unlike the leaves of deciduous shrubs (that seasonally shed their leaves), and, they tend to have showy ornamental flowers, fruits or cones that display a broad spectrum of colors and forms.

As always, it’s important to educate yourself regarding the zone in which you live in order to determine which shrubs are going to do well in your garden. For example, some evergreen shrubs perform better in harsh winters than others. Holly (Ilex), Rhododendron, Mountain Laurel (Kalmia) and Andromeda (Pieris) are some of the shrubs that have proven to do well in our hardiness zone, and have been able to withstand our winter climate.
