Enkianthus – Enkianthus campanulatus
Description
General: Enkianthus campanulatus is an upright, flowering shurb native to Japan. It typically grows 6-10′ sometimes up to 15′ with age.
Leaves: Elliptical, with serrated margins, that are green to blue-green, 2-3″ long
Flowers: Little bell-shaped flowers, can be a creamy-white to whitish-pink to pinkish red depending on varitety. Flowering in late May- early June.
Bark: Smooth, patches of medium to light gray areas, can exfoliate with age revealing tan blotches
Attributes: Unique look as leaves are clustered at the ends of branches. Flowers are quite showy when in bloom. Fall color can vary from oranges, yellows, reds, and even shades of purple at times.
Culture
Hardiness: Zones 4- 7
Growing Conditions: Prefers acidic, well-drained soil in a sunny to partially shady location.
Maintenance: Blooms on previous years growth, so any pruning should be done as soon as possible after flowering to avoid removing flower buds.
Transplanting: We have had no problems transplanting various varieties at any time outside of the heat of the summer.
Our Experience
Experience at Great Hill
We have had great success with a couple different varieties here at great hill. We have some that are older that are over 12′ tall. A beautiful addition to the landscape that provides multi season interest.
Historical Winter Data
Winter 2016-17: No issues with the summer drought to note, no winter damage
Winter 2017-18: No winter damage with heavy snows
